The Unexpected Journey into Artist Management

My journey into artist management happened almost by chance, originating from my background in film directing. While working on various music videos, I developed a unique partnership with an artist named Skai Hye. She required help in building her brand, and with my experience and ongoing studies in Music Business and Production at ACM at UCO, it felt natural for me to get involved. Initially, I offered informal advice on her branding, visuals, and social media presence, which gradually turned into a more significant role. I started shaping her image, planning her releases, and guiding her opportunities. Recognizing my talent for connecting creative elements and seeing the bigger picture, Skai and other artists began seeking my guidance on various projects. This transition led to the creation of "TME" (Taylormade Entertainment). My film background gave me an advantage in visual storytelling and narrative crafting, which easily translated into nurturing and promoting musical talent. Unintentionally, I found myself on a path that brought me closer to the essence of culture and collaboration. Artist management, though fast-paced and unpredictable, has been incredibly rewarding as I watch artists thrive under my guidance.
Balancing Art and Business
A fundamental aspect of my role as a manager involves harmonizing the creative demands of artists with the essential business elements of the music industry. I achieve this by fostering open communication and setting clear priorities. This strategy allows artists to concentrate on their creative visions while I take on the responsibilities of strategic planning, marketing, and negotiation. This ensures that the artist’s creativity remains protected while we collectively build a sustainable career.
Overcoming Industry Challenges
The music industry presents unique challenges, from staying ahead of digital trends and navigating evolving platforms to balancing visibility with long-term development. A significant part of my role is managing expectations of instant success and safeguarding the artist’s mental health and creative integrity. It’s also about dealing with those in the industry who may not prioritize professionalism.
Seeking Authenticity and Passion
When choosing which artists to work with, I prioritize authenticity, a strong work ethic, and a clear creative vision. Talent is important, but I am equally drawn to individuals committed to growth and open to collaboration who have the tenacity to handle the industry's highs and lows. Success is most achievable when an artist’s passion and professionalism match my management style.
Crafting a Public Image
Creating and managing an artist’s public image begins with a deep understanding of their identity and values. I collaborate closely with artists to develop a consistent narrative reflective of who they are, both online and offline. This comprehensive approach encompasses social media strategy, press opportunities, visuals, partnerships, and public appearances—essentially building an authentic brand that resonates with fans and stands out in a saturated market.

The Importance of Networking
Networking is crucial in the music industry because it provides access to collaborations, opportunities, and insider knowledge that isn’t always available online. To build genuine, long-lasting relationships, I attend industry events, remain active on professional platforms, and frequently follow up with contacts. It’s important to support others in the industry, remain engage, and establish a reputation for reliability and integrity.
What to Look for in a Manager
Artists should seek a manager who truly believes in their vision, communicates well, and understands the intricacies of the music industry. A valuable manager should be proactive, connected, and focused on creative growth and long-term career strategies. Trust, transparency, and shared values are crucial in a partnership, which must go beyond a mere business transaction.
Staying Inspired in the Industry
Being part of an artist's journey from vision to reality, and witnessing the impact music has on audiences, inspires and motivates me. Celebrating milestones and overcoming obstacles together fuels my drive. Staying updated with new trends, surrounding myself with creative energy, and knowing that my behind-the-scenes work helps bring meaningful art to life are constant reminders of why I remain passionate about artist management.
The Rewards of Artist Management
The role of an artist manager is inherently behind-the-scenes, requiring patience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to both the business and creative facets of music. While it may not always be glamorous, with its long hours and difficult decisions, the satisfaction of helping artists bring their visions to life and building lasting careers is unparalleled. This work fundamentally revolves around trust, teamwork, and a belief in music's power to connect and inspire. Don’t be afraid to go through the trenches with your artists; it's an essential part of the journey.
